Mass Balancing in Molecular Formulae
« on: February 13, 2009, 12:33:57 AM »
i dnt really know how to start this problem
any help.

A certain metal,   M   forms two oxides   M3O   and   M2O.
If the percent by mass of   M   in   M3O   is   75.0 %   what is the percent by mass of   M   in   M2O ?

oh and also.

A compound contains 5.93 percent hydrogen and 94.07 percent oxygen. It's experimentally determined mass is 34.02 g/mol. What is the molecular formula of this compound ?

The first part is a simple Math exercise, use the information given for M3O and then use that to solve the question regarding M2O.

For the second part, you will need to get the atomic wts of hydrogen and Oxygen in order to calculate the structure.
Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

Can you formula some algebra equations from the information given in the question?
"Say you're in a [chemical] plant and there's a snake on the floor. What are you going to do? Call a consultant? Get a meeting together to talk about which color is the snake? Employees should do one thing: walk over there and you step on the friggin snake." - Jean-Pierre Garnier, CEO of Glaxosmithkline, June 2006

M3O is rather an exotic metal oxide

No, it is your homework!. The forum doesn't do your work for you (check the rules).

We will help by pointing the best way/ showing where you have gone wrong, but you have to show us your efforts to start the process,
Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
