Hi everyone,
This is my first post, so please be nice ;-)
I want to make NiCl2 (Nickel(II) Chloride) for use in electroplating.
I have NiO as a starting material, which I understand is basic, so should react with acids to form a salt (NiCl2) + H2O
I used 9.5cm3 conc HCl (9.23 moldm-3) and 3.7g NiO (a slight excess). I expected to see some visible reaction, but instead the NiO just sat as a sediment at the bottom of the beaker. The acid solution went lime green, so I assume some NiO has reacted. I added 40cm3 dH2O as I thought that solution may be saturated, but there is still lots of NiO at the bottom of the beaker
I will warm the mixture some and see if that helps.
Any thoughts appreciated as I am stuck as what I should do to get the reaction to run.
Note: the acid is about 8 years old, so maybe thats the problem??? Bt it has been in a sealed bottle all that time though.
Thanks,
James.
