A Quick TLC Question
« on: February 17, 2009, 01:35:45 PM »
With an eluent of ethyl ethanoate, which do you think would have a greater affinity for a mobile phase salicylic acid or acetylsalicylic acid?

Here are some hyperlinks of the compounds.
Ethyl Ethanoate: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethyl_acetate
Salicylic Acid: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salicylic_Acid
Acetylsalicylic Acid: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acetylsalicylic_Acid

Can you predict this by looking at the intermolecular forces between each compound and the mobile phase? That's what I hoped..

Thank you for taking the time to read, I hope you can help me =]

Oh sorry, I moved it.  You may be in the high school but this is still an organic chem question, which is why I put it here.

My guess is salicylic acid. Additional -OH moiety enables hydrogen bonding with the -COO- moiety in ethyl ethanoate.
