Basic Nitrogen and Oxygen Question
« on: March 03, 2009, 06:38:26 PM »
Hello all,

I'll be honest with you... I know very little about Chemistry and am worried I've posted this in the wrong place, but I need some advice. To cut a long story short I'm working on a homemade concept project and I need to know how one would go about taking purified Nitrogen and Oxygen (N2 and O2) and converting it to Nitrous Oxide (N2O).

Incidently, I live in the UK - not the US where Laughing Gas is illegal - and the project is not for the purposes of inhaling NO2 for recreational purposes.

I hope somebody can help,

Richard

Briefly, there's no easy way to combine the two elements properly, so that you get the correct product.  Usually, N2O is made by decomposing other nitrogenous compounds, and even then, careful scrubbing is needed, to remove noxious by-products. Wikipedia has the story for you. If you have a legitimate use, you may be able to by a small tank from a dentistry supply company.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

I am interested in the flammable properties of Nitrous Oxide. And the project involves obtaining a sustainable flow of NO2 from a constant feed of Nitrogen and Oxygen.

I know that there are other variants like Nitric Oxide and Nitrogen Dioxide that can be made by using Nitrogenous compounds - however, still, I am wondering... is this possible?
