Weak acid and strong alkali

Why does solution made by combining a weak acid (such as ethanoic acid) with a strong alkali (such as sodium hydroxide) produce a solution (sodium ethanoate) with with an alkali pH?

Hey Clive, it is salt hydrolysis.
I don't understand what is happening at an ionic level which will lead to an excess of [OH-] over [H+] resulting in the alkaline pH.
