chem problem
« on: March 19, 2009, 01:49:34 AM »
Hi,
I've been trying to figure out this problem but can't

The density of ethyl acetate is 0.897g/mL.  What volume of ethyl acetate is required to make a 2% solution of cellulose nitrate provided 25g of cellulose nitrate was used.

I don't know if 2% mean dilution or not because if dilution then I would have to know concentrations of cellulose nitrate which is not given.  All I can think of doing is to figure out moles of cellulose nitrate then supposing it is a 1:1 ratio you can get moles of ethyl acetate then use density to get volume.  But then that totally neglect the piece of information that is 2%.

I am guessing it means 2% by weight and not volume since it did not give you any way to measure the volume of the cellulose nitrate.

It means concentration. As Loyal wrote - most likely weight percentage.
