when balancing, if each equation given has H2O, is that used with H+/OH- in the oxidation or reduction steps?

H+ OH-'s and H2O's redox number should be the same either way you look at it.

H2O.....H is +1 and O is -2

H+ (OH)- OH has an overall charge of -1. So we assign -2 to O and +1 to H to achieve the charge of the hydroxide.

H+ (O2- H+)-    gives the same charge as      H20

Sry. After rereading your question, I don't think I udnerstand it...my answer is prolly not what your looking for.
