Organic Chem concerns on restocking.
« on: March 30, 2009, 03:04:45 PM »
ok say you get a job working as a assistant. You are asked to check the quantity of chemicals in teh stock room to determine which reangents need to be restocked. On the shelf of oxidizers, you find out the that labels on the jar of PCC (Pyridinium Chloropromate) and chromic acid (Jones Reagent) have faded so badly that they are no longer readable.
(1) How will benzyl alcohol be used to tell the difference between the two oxidizers.
(2) How could you us IR to confirm results
(3) How could you us NMR to confirm results

start with the reactions between benzyl alcohol and either PCC or Jones reagent.  What will be the major organic products of each reaction?
