Color Chemist Concerns
« on: April 23, 2009, 02:21:03 PM »
Hi everyone, hopefully I'm posting in the right forum.
So my girlfriend is going back to school for an undergrad Chem degree. She aspires to be a color Chemist in the makeup industry. However, I found out that exposure to organic solvents is harmful to reproductive health.
Does anyone know if color chemists are frequently exposed to organic solvents?
Thanks in advance!

As a general rule, yes, the sorts of procedures used for the analysis and formulation of color compounds for make-up, and especially hair coloring, do require the use of solvents.   There are engineering controls, and personal protective equipment, and individual, personal controls that can be put in place, to provide a level of safety.  It really does depend however, on the lab, and the individual.

Thanks for the quick response. Would you happen to know what the demand is like for a Color Chemist and what the avg salary is?
I thought it'd be best to know all these things before committing to such an endeavor.

It's very worthwhile to think about this sort of thing.  Try Google, with the career choice and 'salary' in the search field.  While you're at it, you can also google for education costs, typical duration for graduation, cost of living in various areas, inflation rates per year, to make a complete informed opinion, about what to do for a living.

I shoulda done that.  They tolded me to do that, when I was in high school.  I instead just went and learned what I wanted to, and enjoyed.  And I hoped it would all fall together, financially.  I'm thinking I may have been wrong, but I dunno, seems like that's too artificial.
