nitration of phenol

Why the usual nitrating mixture (conc. nitric acid and sulphuric acid) is not used for nitration of phenols? Why is only dil. nitric acid used? What will happen if the nitrating mixture is used? What will be the product when dil nitric acid is used? (is it picric acid or nitrophenol)

Obviously -OH changes properties of the aromatic ring.
