ion exchange breakthrough curve for design
« on: September 05, 2009, 10:38:09 AM »
Hi,

I would like to design an ion exchange column to remove Ca and Mg and replace it with Na by passing it through a strong acid cation resin, polystyrene DVB. I believe I need to obtain the 'breakthrough curve' to be able to calculate the length of the column required. I haven't been able to find this. I'm unsure what the curve depends on: Ca, Mg, Na or polystyrene DVB? Are there any other names for it? And am I on the right track to design the column? Any ideas would be great. Thanks!

Phuong.

Hi plam4,

Here is an article with a few figures (related, but not the exact same) that should be able to help you out:

I hope this helps you with your question.
