drawing resonance structures
« on: September 07, 2009, 06:00:53 PM »
i know how to draw a resonance structure but one homework question is throwing me off; i am told to draw the lowest energy alternative resonance structure for the compound that is drawn in the attached file.
my answer was graded as incorrect with no feedback on why this was so; any help will be appreciated.
thanks, Mandy

Your resonance structure is missing some charges, and I think you would have 3 lone pairs on the oxygen, not 2, see attached pic.

The structure I've drawn in that pic is not the most stable alternative structure, can you think of any more? Hint: With less charge separation....
