Finding Volume
« on: September 10, 2009, 10:48:46 PM »
The density of a solution of sucrose is 1.3855 g/cc, and it is 76.00 percent by mass. What volume of
the solution (in milliliters) do you need to supply 46.0 g of sucrose?

How can I approach this question and solve down? Thanks for any tips or hints.

Edit: This is taking into account sig figs as well.

To start with, how do you find 76% of 1.3855g/cc?

Would I go 0.76 x 1.3855 = 1.05298?

Yes, that is correct. Now the next thing you have to know is that 1 cc = 1 mL. So 1.05298 g/mL will be the grams of sucrose you get in every one milliliter. You need 46.0 grams of sucrose total, and each milliliter giver you 1.05298 g; so how many milliliters do you need to get 46.0g?

Well then I would go:

46.0g / 1.05298 g = 43.68 which becomes 43.7 with significant figures, correct?

What do I do from this step?

Thanks very much for your assistance, by the way. :)

43.7 mL is the answer I believe. Don't forget to put the units at the end of your answer!

Take care.
