Nomenclature: which takes priority, an ether or an alkene?
« on: September 15, 2009, 10:45:04 PM »
OK so basically I am trying to name a really big compound, and don't know how to number the chain. I need to decide to give a lower number to an ether group or a C=C double bond. So my question is: which takes priority, an alkene or an ether? I looked on the internet, and 2 different websites give opposing answers, so now I'm a little confused.

This is an ultimate source:

http://www.acdlabs.com/iupac/nomenclature/

(one may expect it to be at IUPAC pages - http://old.iupac.org/publications/epub/index.html, but ACDLabs page is linked from there).
ChemBuddy chemical calculators - stoichiometry, pH, concentration, buffer preparation, titrations.info
