Net ionic equation problem
« on: September 16, 2009, 10:33:31 PM »
I stink at these and I want to know if I picked the right answer
Given the reaction, CoCO3+2HBr :rarrow:CoBr2+H20+CO2 the resulting NET ionic equation is:
a) CoCO3+2H+  :rarrow: Co2++H2CO3
b) Co2++ CO32-+2HBr :rarrow: Co2++Br2-+H2O+CO2
c)CoCO3+2HBr :rarrow: Co2++Br2-+H2O+CO2
d)CoCO3+2H+ :rarrow: Co2++H2O+CO2
e)CoCO3+2HBr :rarrow: Co2++2Br-+H2O+CO2

I guessed letter e. Thank you!  :)

You have to cancel out your spectator ions to get the net ionic equation

Molecular equation : CoCO3 (s) + 2HBr (aq) --> CoBr2 (aq) + H2O (l) + CO2 (g)

Net ionic: CoCO3 + 2H+ --> Co2+ + H2O + CO2

Note how the bromide ion is missing from the net ionic equation as it was a spectator ion.

So, I would choose D  :)
