I read somewhere that increasing the atmospheric pressure will increase the boiling point but will also DECREASE the melting pt. I understand why the boiling pt goes up but why would the melting pt decrease?

increasing atmospheric pressure means more pressure is acting on the solid surface, so you can 'lend the force' from the atmosphere to act on intermolecular bonding, on top of supplying heat to melt the solid. hence, melting point decreases.
