Quantum Number (Is it Correct?)
« on: September 23, 2009, 12:40:03 AM »
Which of the following represent a correct set ofquantum numbers for an electron?

(a) n  =   1       l  =   0       ml  =   0       ms  =   +1

(b) n  =   2       l  =   0       ml  =   0       ms  =   +1

(c) n  =   2       l  =   1       ml  =   −1       ms  =   +1/2

(d) n  =   2       l  =   1       ml  =   1       ms  =   +1

(e) n  =   3       l  =   1       ml  =   2       ms  =   +1/2

Please help me. Thank you! Just want to make sure it's the correct answer!

(e) too is wrong because ml lies in between -l and +l

i.e. for l=1, ml should lie between -1 and +1
for l=2, ml should lie between -2 and +2 and so on

so the correct answer is (c)
