Nitration via sulfonation
« on: October 06, 2009, 11:15:07 AM »
Hi,

I'm looking for the reaction that takes place (attached reaction) between the sulfonate group and nitric acid. I've attached the reaction and what I think the beginning of the mechanism is! Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Hmm, it looks good to me so far according to my research. Did you need any hints or were you just wanting to know if you were on the right track?

Ok I'll give you two hints:
1. Electrophilic substitution.
2. Draw out the structure of the nitronium ion (NO2+)- it will allow you to draw out the mechanism for the reaction.
