NMR question
« on: October 19, 2009, 12:44:10 PM »
Hi everyone.
I have to work out what an unknown compound is from it's 1H and 13C spectra and the ms.
On the 1H spectra one of the peaks is hand labelled exchange D2O, what does this tell me? How should I treat that peak differently?
Thanks very much.
Huw

It means your product had a proton that interchanged with a deuterium from the deuterated solvent.  This would make the peak dissapear off your spectrum.

That's what I figured, but the peak is there.
Do I count the 1H that the peak signifies when I am trying to work out the molecular formula?
What should I do differently in my elucidation because of this?
Thanks

The hand-written label is probably a hint to tell you that you have a labile proton so that cuts down the number of possibilities of what it is.
