Can flash made from KMno4 and Al cause blindness?
« on: November 11, 2009, 09:10:35 AM »
Can flash made from KMno4 and Al in ratio 3:2 (saw from distance about 0,7 m, less than 5g) cause blindness? (we set it on fire by Mg, because this is not a really good ratio) If it is stupid Question, or in bad category sorry. Thanks for all answers. (and i know pyrotechniks are dangerous)

Question is not stupid, but impossible to answer. Depends on zillions of unpredictable factors.

0.7m sounds dangerously close, but I had similar mixture exploding in plastic tube I held in my hand - and I am not blind nor fingerless, so obviously if you are lucky you can survive intact. But that was a stupid mistake on my side and a lesson that I remember very well, I would not try the same for the second time.

If you ever did, you would want to wear a mask with dark contrast.

Mg based flashes do emit UV, so it is not likely good for your eyes.
I was temporarily blinded( 30s or so) by a strontium nitrate and Mg flash made many years ago.

How long was your temporary blindness?

Oh is that what they call it?

I thought he meant his age. I thought he meant he was in his "30's or so."

Thanks for the help Borek - great guy.

:)

Thank-you, Borek for clearing that up before I was online again.

The blindness was likely not the result of the mass of flash, which was only a few grams, non stoichiometric as I wanted longer red light emission, not an explosion, but the fact that it burned faster than anticipated for a nonstoichiometric mix, and this occured less than a meter from me.  Lesson learned: use an ignition method that gives you some distance from what you are testing.
