Improving the yield of triphenylmethanol
« on: November 11, 2009, 11:54:04 AM »
We synthesized triphenyl methanol in lab from bromobenzene, magnesium turnings, and benzophenone with diethyl ether as a solvent.  Everything was dried beforehand and precautions were taken to make sure water did not get in the reaction.  I am wondering what some good ways to improve the percent yield of this reaction might be.

Thanks

What was the procedure you followed? What was the yield?

Grignard reactions are often very high yielding. Variables such as feed order and rate, oxygen contamination, solvent choice and temperture can all affect your yield.
