Lab Equipment
« on: November 11, 2009, 06:45:55 PM »
If I'm wanting to get a glassware set, what would be a recommended set?

What would be a good price (or set...along with a website to purchase) for a beginner?

To make it a little more specific, I would like beakers, flasks, medicine droppers, stir rods, test tubes, mortar and pestle, bottles, funnels, graduated cylinders, watch glasses, thermometer, anything else you think a beginner chemistry would need for a glass set.

Thanks  :)

Thanks, what about a price though?

If I'm looking at

-50 mL erlenmeyer
-250 mL erlenmeyer
-50 mL roundbottom x2
-250 mL roundbottom
-50 mL beaker
-250 mL beaker
-Rubber stoppers with 0/1/2 holes
-Glass piping for the stoppers
-Rubber tubing
-Mortar/pestle
-10 mL graduated cylinder
-100 mL graduated cylinder
-250 mL separatory funnel
-Stemmed funnel
-Sample Vials
-Stir bar
-Hot plate/stirrer
-Test Tubes

(Copied your list)

What would be a reasonable price for these items - around $60-80?

It depends on the quality of the equipment.  Plastic is very very cheap, glass is more expensive, pyrex even more so.

Alright, well I was looking into finding/making my own lab equipment - it would be a lot more fun anyway.

I was wondering about the "flasks/beakers" used from a light bulb - what is the heat capacity of a light bulb? If I were to put it under a flame...or have a exothermic reaction to occur, how much heat can it take?

Thanks.  :P

Haven't thought of trying.  Don't know if they're made out of anything special.  Could give it a go I suppose!

I might try it, maybe use some sort of themometer to measure an approximate heat...or maybe I can find something on a lightbulb site.

It has to withstand a good amount of heat though, 60 watts get way over 100 degrees fahrenheit - not exactly what the climax is though.

Thanks.  :)

I'd say those bulbs get well over 100 oC easily, even higher for halogen bulbs (pretty sure these are made of quartz though)
