Conversion Units. Critical...
« on: November 17, 2009, 08:53:15 AM »
I have this problem where its asking me to convert x Moles/Litre ( M/L) to x Nanomoles/Milliliter ( nMoles/mL).
I know how to convert from moles to nanomoles which is deviding by 1x10-9, but when its also asking for a conversion L to mL at the same time, i get confused as to which part of the fraction ( the moles one , or the litre one) i should convert. If you could lend a hand it would be appreciated.

Also, at the same time its asking me " Obtain a factor which will convert your A410 wavelength  ( Its a spectrophotometer experiment) readings into nMoles/mL.

The part where its saying obtain a factor i dont understand.

Thanks for the consideration lads.

Do it one step at a time

1. 1 mol/L --> 1 x 10-9 nmol/L (as you said)
2. 1 nmol/L --> 1 x 10?? nmol/mL?

So if i had 3.33333 x10e-4 Moles/Litre and wanted to convert to Nanomoles/mL :

3.33333 x10e-4 /1000 =3.3333x10e-7    (to get moles/ml)
and then 3.3333x10e-7 / 1x10e-9 = 333.33 nanomoles/mL

Is this correct? If not, could you point out where i have made the mistake..?

1. 1 mol/L --> 1 x 10-9 nmol/L (as you said)

Apologies for an embarrassing mistake here, the highlighted power should be 9, not -9.

1 mol = 1 x 109 nmol

or alternatively:

1 nmol = 1 x 10-9 mol

3.33333 x10e-4 /1000 =3.3333x10e-7    (to get moles/ml)
and then 3.3333x10e-7 / 1x10e-9 = 333.33 nanomoles/mL

Looks fine to me.

Overall we should have:

A mol/L = A x 109 nmol/L
           = A x (109/103) nmol/mL
           = A x 106 nmol/mL

So,

3.33333 x 10-4 mol/L = 3.33333 x 102 nmol/mL
