~Tangible Products~
« on: November 18, 2009, 09:24:24 PM »
So, this kind of relates back to my "project" thread...but, I would like to specify a project I would like to do.

The question is:

Do you guys know of any experiments (that you have done or not done) that allows a person to mix chemical 'a' with chemical 'b' (with chemical 'c'...etc etc if necessary) that creates a product substance 'p.'

This question is somewhat vague, but I would like to have a lot of ideas. Even something (totally elementary) as simple as mixing a couple of chemicals to form some type of substance that hardens to form a "bouncy" ball.

Also, I most likely have all necessary equipment to do a large variety of experiments.

Any experiments like this - things I can handle...keep...store. Any cool experiments to observe extreme changes of states of matter, etc.

Thanks. :)

You can make silly putty or something fairly similiar with silicone oil, something, and boric acid IIRC...

elephant toothpase is a good one to demonstrate extreme changes in states of matter.. perhaps?

Alright, I can google elephant toothpaste...but what are the procedures (chemicals) for silly putty? - Besides mixing common kitchen ingredients...like eggs, flour, etc.

Thanks :)

adding conc sulpuric acid to sugar, lots of steam liberation and formation of a carbon tower.

"liberation of steam" "formation of a carbon tower"

water and carbon :P

Ah...thank you nj_bartel.  :'(  :'(  :'(

So,

H2SO4 + C12H22O11 :rarrow: 12C + 11H2O + H2SO4  ??

That's what I kinda meant to ask.  ;D

It partially oxidizes it also.. so it produces CO, and SO2 to some degree.

Its not really a full reaction, and it has side reactions so you can't really right it out.. but the main reaction is just the dehydration of sugar via sulfuric acid producing dilute sulfuric acid, and carbon.

elephant toothpaste uses conc. H2O2 and a catalyst such as KMnO2, MnO2, etc AFAIK.

A bouncy ball?

ppt out the casein from milk with acetic acid.  You can then filter and ball it up; I accidentally dropped the filter ball and was surprised at the bounciness. It was an unintended consequence.  I was extracting lactose from milk.

Also
HCl(g) +NH3(g) ---> NH4Cl (s)

Your question is incredibly vague.  Most chemistry is mix a and b and get c.
Unless you mean with no byproducts, then it gets tricky.

Another fun one 10mL acetone +500mL 5.25% NaOCl (bleach) when chilled and allowed to sit for a while will precipitate out a 5-10mL blob of chloroform.

What was it you wanted the lactose for? Did you ever successfully get any pure lactose?

Yes I isolated the lactose successfully.  This was a procedure out of a 60s lab manual.  But shitty reagents and being young with little experience meant my yield was lower than literature though.

As for why....Why not?
