Hey 408,

Does this chloroform introduce any type of serious injury? I'm reading that it can cause incapacitation, is this from smelling the fumes of gas or from drinking the substance?

Thanks :)

You should avoid breathing the fumes.  In addition to being carcinogenic, chloroform has historic use in medicine as an anasethetic and crime as the liquid used on 'knockout rags'

Yeah! That's where I've heard it from...

Thanks :)

If you then react it(chloroform) with acetone and sodium hydroxide, you can extract out 'chlorobutanol', a topical anesthetic :P

In quotes because that is a non-iupac name that could cause confusion in regard to its structure.

In what order should the reactants be mixed?...or does it matter?

It matters - Um... I don't think you want to make it. It is a drug similiar to chloral hydrate - which is a scheduled substance!
I mean.. it would be fun to make, but it just isn't the best thing to walk around telling people you've made it.

Sciencemadness really is the best chemistry experiment site on the English speaking web AFAIK...
Be careful what you post though, they can be a bit picky IMO.

Agreed.  There are a few non-english ones rumored to be good, but not speaking any of their languages I cannot comment.

As long as you do not ask stuff easily found by searching or anything regarding drug cookery or uninformed/unsafe explosives questions you are good to go.

Just not that NaOH is strong enough a base to form the carbene, which can go on to form phosgene, not really the sort of thing you want to be handling "in the garage"...

While I cannot say that no phosgene could be formed, I can say I did this when 15, in an unventilated basement in a stoppered flask with no ill effects.

With such an excess of acetone I would be surprised if any carbene could escape.
