chemical kinetics
« on: November 21, 2009, 11:13:39 AM »
The following data were obtained during the first order thermal decomposition of SO2Cl2 at a constant volume.
SO2Cl2 (g) gives SO2(g) and Cl2(g)
Experiment 1 Time=0sec Total Pressure=0.5 atm.
Experiment 2 Time=100 Sec Total Pressure= 0.6 atm.
Calculate the rate of the reaction with total pressure is 0.65atm

The answer is given as 7.8 x 10 power -4 atm.per sec.

Do any one give me the solution please how to solve it.

Because the reaction is 1st order so: v = kP(SO2Cl2)
t=0, the pressure = the initial pressure of sulfonyl chloride.
Can you calculate the pressure of SO2Cl2 at t = 100s ? Try it .
Then, apply the formula related between the pressure and k and t to compute k: ln(P0/Pt) = kt
After getting k, you can compute the rate.
Hope it helps ;)
