dear all,

I am currently designing a flocculation tank as a part of water treatment process for a gasification plant. The treated water has to be potable. I was looking all over internet to find the suitable dosage and found out that the added range of municipal water system is usually between 6-120ppm of alum (from certain gardening site). Can someone confirm the value? Please let me know the source as well.

The value for alum to flocculate materials in a system strongly depend on the type and concentration of contaminants.

The range for Alum is typically between 90-500 ppm.  When treating clear water, then dosages between 6-120 can be used.
