I used three because I thought there were three single bonds protruding out of both boron atoms. If it's not three then what is it and how did you derive that?

Should it be (6-2)/2

This diagram is for B₂. You now need to fill in the correct number of electrons for B₂^2- --> it will give you the number of bonding and antibonding electrons.
