Isomers of butene
« on: December 26, 2009, 01:49:18 PM »
assuming we are excluding cycloalkanes etc... and only taking the basic ones then they are

but-1-ene
but-2-ene
2-methylpropene

BUT
why is there not

1-methylpropene
1,1-dimethylethene
etc...
WHY are there ONLY 3 basic ones?

Can you draw each of these 5 molecules out, and see what you get?

well

1,1-dimethylethene = 2-methylpropene
1-methylpropene = but-1-ene / but-2-ene

So actually i was wrong - they should not exist

thanks for your help anyway
