Opinion about leaving a job
« on: January 04, 2010, 04:22:17 PM »
I was hired 3 months after I graduated by a company that does work for the Department of Energy at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation. I have been working here for 5 months now and want to leave if I can find a job.  I am a Radiochemist/Environmental Engineer it pays well and the benefits are ok, but I hate it.

There are multiple reasons behind my contempt for this job.

1. Everyone else makes more than me and has awesome benefits. Somehow I got screwed out of higher pay and benefits. The girl next to me who technically works for me makes 10,000 more a year with a Biology degree.

2. The company that I work for is a jerk. The DOE called the day due to weather, all the salaried and managers get the day covered by the DOE. I have to make up the hours. They have also told me I will not be getting a raise...ever.

3. I don’t do any chemistry. Due to the union somehow doing all the work (with high school diplomas) I can’t actually do any chemistry. I can’t prep samples or run an instrument. I am effectively a manager I troubleshoot for people and fix things when they go wrong. I also do data review and procedure development.

4. I am bored the whole time I am here. On any given day I do about 30min of work.

So, is my hate for this job justified? Will leaving a job after 5months look bad or can I give these reasons to future employers?

Sorry for the rant.

When you apply to another company what will your current company say about you?

Many jobs are created expecting that the turnover will be high (for instance fast food places).

Many companies recently are looking at the bottom line and deciding that to be less generous to employees that are new hires.

Build your resume' (more education in the evening etc. ) and move on.

If you're that unmotivated find another job and move on.

It is generally easier to find new employment if you are in employment so don't quit then start job hunting.
Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

I'd leave too.  It sounds like what you have is a dead end job.  Sure the current pay and benefits is nice but thats now, how about a few years down the road?

DO NOT quit then start looking for a job.  Start looking for a job, find one then quit.

When I'm recruiting for a postition and I have two EQUAL candidates infront of me one in empolyment and one who has quit I'll take the one in empolyment everytime.  I'd not be sure about the comitment of the person who's quit their last job.  Did they quit for the reasons they say, were they told to find another job or were they actually sacked for something?

Leaving a job for a better one is fine (5 months is a bit short to quit but reading your post i can understand it) but leaving a job and then later going job hunting does not look good to a potential employer.

I would talk to your boss about the situation and if they are unwilling to raise your pay and give you better benefits then find another job.
