Electropolishing Solution - Ethylene glycol + Acids
« on: February 17, 2010, 10:33:48 AM »
Hi, I am making an Electropolishing Solution -

94 ml Ethylene glycol
2 ml of 70% Perchloric Acid
2 ml of 68% Nitric Acid
2 ml of 36% Hydrochloric acid

I have asked around at work and on the no-one has much advice on how to ensure how to do this safely. Does anyone have any idea of possible dangers and what order to add the acids to the Ethylene glycol? Any advice would be great!

I don't think order will matter much. To be safe - apron, lab glasses & gloves are a must when dealing with concentrated acids. You will need fume hood or prepare the mixture in the open air. But don't let it scare you.
