Gravimetric Analysis Question
« on: February 25, 2010, 08:33:35 AM »
Hi.

I've carried out a gravimetric analysis on Ni(II)Cl2 using Magnesium powder and I was hoping to check my results, so is it possible to find out the theoretical mass of Nickel from the following information and reaction equation?

Ni(II)Cl2 + Mg => MgCl2 +Ni
Concentration of Ni(II)Cl2 is 1moldm3.
Volume of Ni(II)Cl2 is 15cm3.
Mass of magnesium used to displace Nickel is 0.6g.

Thanks.

I think I've figured it out myself.

Mol = volume x concentration, therefore moles on LHS = 0.03, because the ratio is one to one.

Which means that Ni = 0.015 x 56
                             = 0.84g

Can anyone tell me if this is correct?

Molar mass of Ni is not 56, so you are slightly off.

Just in case you should check if magnesium is not a limiting reagent.
