How to backwash a column (flash column)?
« on: March 19, 2010, 07:06:21 PM »
Hi,

I have just bought some Amberlite XAD-2 (polystyrene adsorbent resin) and some Dowex Marathon WBA (anionic ion exchange resin)  to use in the purification of a compound.
In the manual they tell me to backwash the column for a certain amount of time. I understand that I have to introduce a flow of water to the end of the column, but I don't really know how to do it. Should I use some kind of a pump?
We have a water pump in the lab, but the slowest setting is way to fast to use for my column.

Any help is highly appreciated!

Best regards,
Emil

If it is resin (and not a packed column), how can it be back flushed (if no front or back ends are defined?)
