question about hydrogenation of organic compounds
« on: May 04, 2010, 05:00:38 AM »
This is a question in my chemistry workbook:
When heated, liquid alkenes may be converted into solid akanes,

                  B
Alkene + A  :rarrow: Alkane (tried to put B and C above the arrow)
                  C

Identify the required reagent A, sbustance B and condition C necessary for the conversion to occur

I am guessing it is something about hydrogenation. My guess is that A is hydrogen, B is some sort of catalyst and I have no idea what condition C is.

Can someone help me out. Thanks in advance.  :)

You are right, A is probably H2.  My guess is B and C are Pd (or Pt) and C (as in carbon) respectively.  Pd on C is a common catalyst for hydrogenation reactions.

Certainly B is the metal catalyst.  C could be the carbon, but my guess would be the solvent.

Surely A is hydrogen, B will be the catalyst and C would be Heat
Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

Yep. Thanks guys for the input.

I asked my teacher and A was hydrogen, B was a catalyst and C was heat and pressure.
