Help needed: Chemistry Coursework

okay to give a brief but not boring overview of my current predicament i was given my unit 2 chemistry coursework a few months ago and as usual procastrinated my ass off and now its 2 weeks overdue, what is more the results i needed for my coursework i have lost and my teacher is fuming and is adament i must get the coursework handed in today. Ive sat since 5AM GMT trying to get this done and im still stuck on many things..

Yes i know i probably dont deserve help etc but i need to get a pass in this to get into university my future is at stake and i probably will never make the same mistakes ever again!

So onto my question:

My paper says

Chlorine in cyclohexane

Bromine in Cyclohexane

Iodine in Cyclohexane

each of which i have 2cm3 of and i am added 10 drops of cyclohexane to.

The question is:

Now add 2cm3 of the halide solution (i have no idea what the halide solution was any guesses). Im then asked which one of the combinations will a reaction occur in and im supposed to give a brief explanation..

The chlorine, bromine and iodine are the halides.

Right i have just re-read the question and to type it all out would be boring but yes i see that makes sense....

the question is in context with me doing an experiment but as im at home  and not in a lab im not actually doing an experiment..

So i think its asking me to take 2cm3 of halogen solution and then add 10 drops of cyclohexane it then tells me the colours of each.... for example:

Chlorine+Cyclohexane: Colourless
Bromine+Cyclohexane: Orange
Iodine+Cyclohexane: Violet

Then it says add 2cm3 of any halide of my choice and swirl gently if a reaction has occured a different halogen has been released/formed and the organic matter layer will change colour

the question i have to answer is:

in which of the combinations does a reaction occur?

Are you sure this is cyclohexane. You have solutions of halides in cyclohexane - why more cyclohexane is added?

Moreover - chlorine (but not bromine and iodine) easily reacts with cyclohexane - are you sure this is solution of Cl2 in cyclohexane
Moreover - iodine in organic solvent is violet only when any halogen is present in solvent, eg iodine in carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, chlorohexane.

okay im just going to type out the entirety of the coursework question it would probably be easier so word for word this is it:

Method
The Reaction between Halide Ions and Halogens

To 2Cm3 of a Halogen solution add 10 drops of Cyclohexane (this will selectively dissolve the majority of the Halogen present forming the upper layer and result in a characteristic coloured solution):

Chlorine in Cycloehexane - Colourless solution

Bromine in Cyclohexane - Orange solution

Iodine in Cyclohexane - Violet solution

Then add 2 cm3 of the halid solution of your choice and swirl gently. If a reaction has occured, another halogen will be formed and the organic layer (the upper cyclohexane is used) will change colour.

Repeat for a combination,

(a) in which of the combinations does a reaction occur?

Record your results on the table below:

(b) what do the results from the above expierments indicate about (a) the order of the reducing power of the halide ions and (b) the order of oxidising power of the elemental halogens?

i, order of reducing power of halide ions

ii, order of the oxidising power of elemental halogen

(c) Can you explain your answers to questions (a) and (b) using ideas of electronic structure?

Now I probably understand. To a halogen solution you add water halide solution (ie KI , KBr or KCl) and sometimes reaction occurs (Cl2 reacts with Br- and I-, and Br2 reacts with I-) ???

Still in question is color of iodine in cyclohexane.

It turns violet according to my coursework....

im frightful that without actually having access to a lab to record results etc i wont be able to complete this coursework and in that case i wont get to university next year :/
