The solubility of K-Phthalimide in DMF and DMSO at room temperature is low (gives a suspension) but upon heating to 70-100°C it is better. But as long as a small amount of K-Phthalimide is dissolved the reaction will occur.

I'm bumping on this question for interest.

Does anyone know a good solvent for potassium phthalimide (at room temperature)? Water excluded, unfortunately I can't use it.

You can always try HMPT or hot DMF.  HMPT is dangerous and expensive though :(.  I would go with what OC pro said, unless you have a full scale laboratory with appropriate equipment.
