DILUTIONS!!
« on: June 05, 2010, 02:36:54 AM »
hello im a new here and im stuck on a chemistry question can u plz help me?

The question is:
The volume of solution in 50ml, 0.242 mol L-1 hydrochloric acid was diluted to the volume in 500ml. Calculate molarity of the diluted solution.  ???

also can u explain how to USE C1V1 = C2V2

thank you  ;D

How to use? Basic algebra skills - solve for the unknown.

after u sub that (remembering to change ml to L) into equation and solving it
it doesnt seem like the right answer

my working out:
V1 = 50ml = 0.5L

C1 = 0.242 mol L-1

V2 = 500ml = 5L

using the formula your sun these into it and re-arrange...

and then u get 0.00242.... (dat doesnt sound right...)

so if i got that right how do u work out molarity? :(

V1 = 50ml = 0.5L

No. How many milliliters in 1L?

Quote
V2 = 500ml = 5L

No. See above.

Show details of what and how you did. And please use English. No idea what you want me to do with my sun.

ohhh its supposed to be sub  :-[ haha and its english  ;)

okay so its:

V1 = 50ml = 0.05    C1 = 0.0242     V2 =500ml = 0.5

therefore once its into the equation it looks like this

0.0242 x 0.05 = C2 x 0.5

0.0242 x 0.05 = C2
-------------
 0.5

C2 = 0.00242

i obviously dont get it..

Your approach is correct, but you should pay more attention - is the initial concentration 0.242M or 0.0242M?

And why do you think 0.00242M is wrong?
