Vegetable oil aluminium can stove
« on: June 23, 2010, 03:55:02 AM »
I am thinking about using vegetable oil as fuel for my aluminium can stove because alcohol is very expensive where I live. I just want to know what are products of combustion of vegetable oil. I don't want to be poisoned or have lungs full of carbon. Thanks for answer.

I do not know if veggie oil is worthwhile, doesn't it need a relatively high temperature to ignite vs. alcohol? White gas (Get the gallon Coleman jugs for cheap at walmart.) is a much more viable an cheaper alternative.

An oil fire will destroy your aluminum can like it's paper. coleman fuel works well in a can stove and 91% isopropyl alcohol works well also. iso is super cheap at the walmart pharmacy section. i have used both of these fuels in a soda can stove with good results but the alcohol burns cleaner and will usually produce less soot than coleman fuel. alternatively, why not just buy some sterno? it's cheap, readily available and all you have to do is open the can and light it.

if you still want to use vegetable oil and can make a stove that can handle it
you might want to convert the vegetable oil to bio diesel for better burning

Wouldn't propane be cheaper?
Get a big BBQ propane tank.
Then, at Walmart or some hardware store (home depot, Reno depot), they sell this kind of hose. One end goes to the tank. The other end is for the small attachable things. I plugged a propane torch head.

Clean burning propane!

isopropylic alcohol is too expensive.
methanol is less expensive but still too much.

i would think that used vegetable oil from deep frying would be cheaper than propane.
