Benzoic Acid from Sodium Benzoate
« on: June 28, 2010, 05:22:07 PM »
I want to make benzoic acid from sodium benzoate. How to isolate it? Should I use HCl + Sodium Benzoate? If I need to use acids, I currently have acetic and citric acid.

I don't see why HCl and Sodium Benzoate wouldn't work.

It seems all you would really need is a stronger acid than benzoic acid.

Is citric acid or acetic acid stronger than benzoic acid?

Benzoic acid is poorly soluble in cold water (a few grams per liter)

But can I react citric acid with sodium benzoate to make benzoic acid?

Try wikipedia. pKa values for each of these compounds is given

Citric acid is a bit "stronger" than benzoic one but but using HCl is needed
