I have looked around and came back empty. Is there such a material that will phosphoresce in response to friction (heat) instead of exposure to light?

Try looking up Triboluminescence.

If you take simple table sugar and grind it in dark (very dark) room, you will see yellowish glow. It was a popular physics trick from my childhood.
