Concertrating Acids
« on: July 07, 2010, 06:36:49 AM »
How I can concentrating the following acids

1. 25% 4M Sulfuric Acid (Battery acid) into a 98% 18M
2. 5% Acetic acid (Vinegar) to (glacial) 98% acetic acid

Though concentration of both acids is possible from theoretic point of view there is a little chance that after a huge effort you will obtain a concentration of ~ 90 %.
Search google
... and be extremely careful with experiments.

We talked about just using drain opener as a source of Sulfuric Acid.  I've been using it for a while. Works pretty good.

As far as glacial acetic acid goes...I'm not sure. I might try to go about it indirectly.
If you had a distiller you could easily make 95% ethanol, then oxidize it to make your acetic acid.
Never tried it, though.

Yes. But, you will make some SO2 gas. So get a good fume hood or do it outside. Definitely something you don't want to breathe.

And...how much chemistry experience do you have? Are you just making sulfuric acid and acetic acid for the heck of it, or do you have other plans?

Sulfuric boil down as previously stated.

Acetic: react with bicarbonate to get sodium acetate.  Evaporate to dryness.  Dry in an oven. Put it in your oven at around 80-90C to turn the trihydrate into the anhydrous...it smells like baking bread for whatever reason.  Mix with concentrated sulfuric acid and distill, collecting the fraction from 115-120C.  And bingo, glacial acetic acid.  Harmless compared to the vapours you will encounter boiling down concentrated sulfuric...
