C02 Scrubber
« on: July 17, 2010, 10:23:55 AM »
Hello,

I'm interested in isolating and storing for later use, pure C02 from the air, ultimately using just electricity. So I suppose I'm looking for a reaction that I can employ that allows me to recycle my reactants and end up with C02 as a product by investing energy.

So far, I have considered NaOH, which I understand will combine with C02, but then I'm concerned about isolating ONLY C02 and not anything else from air. Additionally, I'm not sure how I would release CO2 from Na2CO3 and then recover NAOH for re-use.

Am I on the right path here? Is there an easier way?

Any feedback would be appreciated and would go to a good cause ^_^

Do you realize how little carbon dioxide there is in the atmospheric air? It is about 0.033 volume percent which is about 330 volumes per million volumes of air. You will have to scrub tremendous volumes of air to get small amounts of carbon dioxide.

Sounds like a ridiculous idea to me.

:\

With respect, it looks to me like you've drawn some conclusions about the application of my project when none were provided.

Helpful as I'm sure you were trying to be, you didn't answer the question either. Therefore, I humbly ask that we please stay on topic.

Thanks in advance for your help

TurboSlug;

There are ways to produce carbon dioxide that are fairly simple. Producing pure carbon dioxide by scrubbing atmospheric air is not one of those. I am just trying keep you from wasting your time, energy and money.

Quoting from your original post: "I'm interested in isolating and storing for later use, pure C02 from the air, ..." .  I fail to see how my reply  was "off topic".

I am just trying keep you from wasting your time, energy and money.

The reason why I'm trying to collect C02 from the air and not produce it using limestone (for example) is precisely in consideration for saving time and money. Being able to recycle the reactants by introducing additional energy into the system eliminates the requirement to continually introduce new reactants into the system which obviously saves money and maintenance time.  In consideration for the energy requirement for such an application, my reasoning is that each photon that falls to the earth uncollected, is wasted energy. No amount of energy collected in this way is wasted energy... quite the contrary.

Edit: I think I'm just going to sort out what I'm looking for on my own
