Chemistry of coal
« on: August 16, 2010, 10:39:44 PM »
Hi is it fair to say that the equation to combust coal is C + O2 ->CO2 assuming coal is 70% carbon?
Although coal contains H, N, O and trace amounts of S?

Should I be trying to derive the amounts of the other elements using stoichiometry or is this too complicated?

Thanks in advance!

Well coal is not a chemical compound but a mixture of other compounds.Deriving the amounts of the other elements using stoichiometry will be too complicated. I think C + O2 ->CO2 will be fine (I could be wrong though).
