do we need methane to live?
« on: September 03, 2010, 12:56:47 AM »
I am doing an assignment about methane and its global cycles over the millenia, and all the information I can find about it is negative - i.e. 'how to reduce methane emissions' etc., but I was wondering whether we do actually need some methane in our atomosphere in order to survive? or would it be beneficial to all life if we were to wipe it all out? (if we could that is, i know that there are microbes that produce it everyday) but surely it is not just all bad news? does it benefit us at all?  :-\
Thank you so much for your help :).

As far as I know - no. But its presence could be crucial at the beginning, google Miller–Urey experiment.
