I cant figure out the net ionic for NaAl(OH)2CO3] +HCl
« on: September 11, 2010, 04:25:19 PM »
Hey everyone,

so Im in Gen Chem for Eng and have to find the net ionic equation for rolaids([NaAl(OH)2CO3]) +HCl. heres what ive gotten so far

NaAl(OH)2CO3] +4H+ --> 3H2O + CO2 + Na+ + Al3+

We use masteringchemistry.com to submit our homework electronically. It told me that this is wrong for the net ionic. Anybody have any idea where I went wrong?

Do you know the difference between a total and net ionic equation?

I think so? I mean I ignored the Cl- as spectator's, so would I also ignore the Na and the Al? Becuase I also tried this
NaAl(OH)2CO3] +4H+ --> 3H2O + CO2

and it was also wrong

thanks for the quick reply btw

My bet is they want you to start with NaAl(OH)2CO3 in dissociated form.

So I figured it out, Turns out my first answer was the correct answer...however, I answered with [] around the compound(the same way they presented it to me). However the answer was without the []....Extremely dumb on their part, but this website frequently has issues like this(answer to another problem was 1200g...accepted entry was 12g) or put your answer as an integer(accepted is 2.5)

rather than start a new topic I figure ill post here

HNO3 --> N2O half reaction
I got 2HNO3(aq) + 8H+(aq) + 8e- --> N2O(g) + 5H2O(l)

Website says its wrong. now it may be a bug again, but i might also be wrong haha. thanks in advance

I got the same thing for that half reaction. Maybe they want it written 10H+ + 2NO3- ...->
