Draw a structure given a molecular formula?
« on: September 15, 2010, 05:57:21 PM »
This is from a multi-part problem. I'm asked to draw a structure that has two tertiary carbons and the rest secondary carbons for the formula C8H14. I've been trying for the past half an hour but I can't figure it out. Could someone give me a hint? My hydrogens are always off.

2 things:

1) All secondary carbons should be a big hint to you.  That restricts the structure in a significant way.

2) If you calculate the degrees of unsaturation you get 1.  Based on the above information that leaves pretty much one option.
