Mechanism problem...
« on: September 29, 2010, 02:20:09 AM »
Would you please help me with the mechanism of this reaction?
Any hint would be OK.
At my own guess, the intermediate might be a furan-like 5-membered ring fused with a benzene ring...anyway, it's just a intuitive guess...
And what also disturbs me is that whether the dioxiane serves as a nucleophile or it's just a solution.

An example of Cannizzaro reaction,
The Cannizzaro reaction, named after its discoverer Stanislao Cannizzaro, is a chemical reaction that involves the base-induced disproportionation of an aldehyde lacking a hydrogen atom in the alpha position.
