Hi, for my lab I have to determine the chemical equations for forming fremy salt....
however, i'm stuck and i've been trying to work it out and understand the reasoning for each product.
we added NaNO2 + HSO3-. glacial acetic acid was added so i assume its used to flood the solution with H+ ions
HNO2 + HSO3- , HSO3- is unaffected because H2SO3 is a strong acid.
however, i'm unsure of where to go with HNO2 + HSO3- ->
in our experiment ammonia was added till the solution was alkaline
so i'm assuming the next step is
NO2- + SO3(2)- ->
i looked on wikipedia but I still want to understand how water is evolved and why NO2 loses an oxygen... to form ON(SO3)2 (2-)
I tried to understand it in terms of the basic reactions ie displacement synthesis etc...but I don't know why it's forming that compound instead of any other arrangement.
