How would one go about calculating the displacement of a solvent that the solute/powder has on it? For example you have 100mL of solvent, you add the solute, and then it may rise to 102mL.

In the case of insoluble powder - you need to know volume of the powder, but without air trapped between particles, it can be tricky.
In the case of soluble substance - best approach is to use solution density table.
