Oxidation Numbers of Ti
« on: November 02, 2010, 05:17:17 PM »
Which element exhibits both +1 and +3 oxidation numbers in its compounds?
A) B
B) Be
C) Sn
D) Ti

It's supposed to be D, but I fail to see why Titanium would have oxidation numbers of +1 and +3. What makes it likely for Titanium to have oxidation numbers of +1 and +3?

Transition metals have more than one oxidation number. That is why Ti has oxidation numbers of +1 and +3.

Titanium show oxidation states +2, +3 and +4. I haven't heard about +1 OS yet.
By the way boron oxide B2O is known
